Rockstars@Work: The Anti-Corporate Culture

The phrase “Anti-Corporate Corporation” may seem like an oxymoron, but Tony Nuckolls of Quicken Loans proved the contrary in his presentation at the RockStars @ Work Conference.

The phrase “Anti-Corporate Corporation” may seem like an oxymoron, but Tony Nuckolls of Quicken Loans proved the contrary in his presentation at the RockStars @ Work Conference.

The anti-corporate measures Quicken has taken have greatly contributed to their ability to recruit and reatain employees.  The first measure, which Tony placed great emphasis on, was organizational language.  At Quicken, employees are “team members”, bosses are “leaders”, and departments are “groups”.  The use of this language promotes a laid back, personal culture.

Another strategy implemented by Quicken Loans is a constant reinforcement of the company philosophy through experience. Quicken does this by holding small group meetings, social gatherings, and encouraging volunteer work.  Through various tele-thons, walks, and charity events, Quicken Loans team members average anywhere from 40-60 volunteer hours a year.

Quicken Loans also works to raise the level of awareness of its team members.  They aim for all team members to be high level thinkers, and remain committed to what they do.

A phrase commonly used at quicken is “Every client.  Every time.  No exceptions.  No excuses.” This phrase aids in both team members and clients experiencing an anti-corporate culture.

By placing emphasis on experience, implementing unique organizational language, and raising awareness to “high level”, Quicken Loans is The anti-corporate corporation.

Tony Nuckolls sums it up by saying, “When you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work.”

In an organization like Quicken Loans it is easy to understand that work doesn’t have to feel like work.
